A technology driven approach to improving the fisheries value chain
Fish supply is projected to increase to 200 million metric tonnes world wide by 2030. An average of 15% of fish caught is wasted. A significant reduction in fish loss and waste will ensure food security as population is expected to reach 9.8 billion by 2050 which means an increase in food demand. Causes of food loss and wastage in the fisheries include lack of cold chains, inefficient processing methods, poor access to credit, gender and wealth bias in access to technology and markets as well as poor understanding of good hygiene and handling practices. Leveraging on technology advancements to build an end to end supply chain platform, Oceansmall aims to contribute significantly to reducing food loss and waste in the fisheries.
